The Formula for BMI
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using height and weight. The standard formula is: BMI = weight (kg) / height² (m). For imperial measurements, the formula is BMI = [weight (lbs) / height² (in)] * 703.
Understanding the Ranges
Health professionals classify BMI scores into four main categories:
- Underweight: Below 18.5
- Normal weight: 18.5 to 24.9
- Overweight: 25.0 to 29.9
- Obesity: 30.0 or higher
